Exercising Our 2nd Amendment Right

My dad and I had a little father-son bonding time this past Saturday in the form of skeet shooting with his shotguns. For not shooting at a moving target in over 15 years I didn't do too bad. I did much better with the 410 (9 for 18) than with the 12-gauge (2 for 12). It was a lot of fun and if I don't go back to Iraq in November, I'm looking forward to a weekend in the deer stand over the holidays...mmmmm...deer sausage!!! =)

Venison is the only game meat that I'll eat, it is quite delicious.

Speaking of raw meat..southpaw..

You can read all about our milita right HERE

Am I to guess you are a vegan, southpaw?

Great article Skye to answer Southpaw's question.

Southpaw...let a foreign nation try and invade through South Louisiana and they will quickly learn about a citizen's militia ;)

The leftist southpaw said...

uh, no, I hate vegetables.

The leftist southpaw said...

CT- I do not doubt the ability of southern Louisiana to defend itself from an invading force.

However, I think you know that I was making an observation about your claim to a second amendment "right," which I do not believe exists.

Southpaw,

There is more to veganism than just vegetables...can't say the same for liberals, however.

Also, the constitution and amendments were written in plain, straightforward english - clearly defining our rights - including the items in the 2nd amendment.

What I'd like to you to tell me, Southpaw, where specifically in the constitution is it written there shall be a separation of religion and state? What verse, what section?

The leftist southpaw said...

First, there are no "verses" in the constitution. You want to read verses, open a bible.

Where is it written that you must be told you have the right to a lawyer? Where is it written that the President can or cannot tap phones without a warrant?

Still looking? You can stop now. It's not written anywhere. It is simply how the document has been interpreted to provide certain rights and governances, as intended by President Madison and the other founding fathers.

Those who claim that the 2nd amendment gives INIDVIDUALS the right to bear arms ignore the first few words: A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

So, how would some other amendments looked if we took away the first few words?

"the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law"

The accused? so if I accuse you of a violation of civil law, this amendment applies? It would appear so. Only I left out the first few words, "In all criminal prosecutions." Changes the whole context.

"the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise reexamined in any court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law. " This applies to criminal cases too? It would appear. Oh, sorry, ignored the first few words, "In suits at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars"

the uber-conservative former Supreme Court Chief Justice Warren Berger once called the NRA's Second Amendment interpretation "a fraud on the American public."

And why do you assume I'm a vegan? Because I'm liberal? You wouldn't like it if I assumed you were a gay-bashing, art-hating, bible-thumping hick simply because your conservative, would you?

I LOVE vennison!

Exactly why do liberal accuse conservative and our President of stomping on the Constitution?

You can't have it both ways.

Opinions don't count in constitutional matters. What is written does.

What is it with liberals and your entrenched xenophobic mindset?

Thanks for letting the mask slip to give us a view into the liberal cognitive process.

mask slip?

not quite. Don't think for a minute I do not know exactly what I'm saying.

Opinion does not matter? so why does the supreme court exist?

I've told CT, and now I'm telling you- go read Marbury vs. Madison and get back to me.

I hope you folks don't mind if I return to topic:

My Dad and I used to do the same bonding thing with skeet shooting in Ohio. My favorite shotgun is a 16 gauge 5 shot semi-amutomic, but it doesn't seem accurate enough for skeet.

The 12 gauge is just WAY too much kick for me, so I stick to the 20 for skeet.

We haven't done the guns in a while. Dad likes to come down here and golf, which is something I could live without.

Anyway, welcome home! I'm having a bumper sticker/political slogan contest:

This didn't have ANYTHING to do with politics, but "southpaw" HAD to go there. Guns don't kill people. PEOPLE kill people.

"the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed."

See. The PEOPLE. Don't say JUST for military. Just smoke a cig, and calm down about gun rights southpaw.

Southpaw...since you brought Madison into the conversation, let's see what Madison himself had to say on the subject:

From Federalist No. 46:

Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation, the existence of subordinate governments,to which the people are attached, forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition, more insurmountable than any which a simple government of any form can admit of.

How about Hamilton in Federalist No. 29:

What plan for the regulation of the militia may be pursued by the national government is impossible to be foreseen...The project of disciplining all the militia of the United States is as futile as it would be injurious if it were capable of being carried into execution... Little more can reasonably be aimed at with the respect to the people at large than to have them properly armed and equipped

Let's see what a Supreme Court judge appointed by Madison had to say. Justice Story in Commentaries on the Constitution:

The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered, as the palladium of the liberties of a republic; since it offers a strong moral check against the usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers; and will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them.

I could go on and on. The original intent of this amendment is very clear. The attempt at re-writing it in to something it is not is a feeble attempt at thinking that if all the guns were removed then crime would fall and murders with guns would drop.

Well if that is the case, there shouldn't be any more gun crimes in London since the '97 ban right. Definitely not the case. In fact the crimes involving guns have risen by over 40% a year since.

Mike...yeah it is definitely great bonding time that I've always cherished since hunting rabbits when i was barely big enough to hold up a gun.

kayne...while your main point is accurate...the post was meant to be both personal (time with dad) and political (due to the title), so Southpaw was not out of bounds taking issue with it and turning it political.
