A Long Way Gone

I am in the middle of reading one of the most heart-wrenching books I've ever read in my life. It is entitled, "A Long Way Gone: The Memoirs of a Child Soldier." Ishmael Beah takes you on a journey of his life growing up in Sierra Leone in the 90's during the rebel war. I haven't gotten to the soldier part yet, but even before, this little 12 year old child saw more horrific sites and literally faced death more times than the vast majority of Westerners combined. I found myself thinking back to what I was doing in 1993 (full scale college life and before becoming a Christian) while he was going through a literal hell on earth and it saddened me even more.

This is one of the issues I hope to learn more about while I am in Burundi next month.

It is definitely a book you don't want to read in public if you don't want to cry in public. They are on sale at Starbucks, so next time you pick up a Latte, add this book to your library. You won't be able to put it down, and I promise you won't be the same after reading it.
