I was asked in an interview last week what did I think was the biggest mistake Republicans have made over the last 10 years. My answer was not focusing enough attention on finding a solution for illegal immigration.
I wasn't asked what my solution would be but here it is.
It needs to happen in two stages. First stage is get rid of illegal immigration and then the second stage is to start a guest worker program.
The first stage consists of three parts. We must do whatever it takes to secure our borders. If that means putting armed forces on the border, so be it. Other options are a fence, A LOT MORE border agents, or a citizen corp like the Minutemen.
The second part is to deport any illegal found within 24 hours. If someone can't prove they are here legally within 24 hours the chances are very high they aren't. The very very small few who might get caught and deported accidentally would be so miniscule that it is not even worth talking about.
The third part is to raise fines on companies who hire illegal to extremely high penalties. If no one will hire them, then that in itself would almost solve the problem alone.
Those three ideas need to be in place first before any type of guest worker program should go into effect. After we have secure borders, illegals are sent home and companies are no longer hiring illegals, then a program that allows legal aliens to enter the country to work for a fixed amount of time can be started. However in order to apply for the program it must be done in the person's country of origin. Anything less is just another form of amnesty.
A quick note on funding: The amount of money that would be saved by not having to support those that are here illegally would pay for this plan several times over.
Now, I'm not naive enough to think that this would solve the problem completely, but I really think it would make a major dent in the problem.

Excellent idea, Bro! How about adding the following. Getting rid of programs that make is easier for illegal immigrants to have babies and the tax payers picking up the cost. For example, Kansas has a program called SOBRA which allows an illegal immigrant who's pregnant to deliver at a local hospital and SOBRA will pay for what is left of the hospital bill (it could be the entire bill). So essentially they deliver at a great hospital like KU MED here in Kansas City on the taxpayers, but the women who are here legally (Work, student visas, etc) are not qualified for the program and are responsible for the entire bill. Why are we punishing those who came legally?
I'll defenitly use this to guide my research for my small group discussion! Very helpful.
Thanks I forgot to include that concept. I would incorparte that in the third part of the first stage. Besides just penalizing companies for hiring illegals, all laws on the books that in any way provide services or benefits to illegals (especially better benefits than citizens) would be repealed. You give a perfect example. Others would be driver's licenses, in-state tuition, and citizenship to babies born in which both parents are illegal to name just a few.
Our conversation obviously led to the post =)

I agree. Even if you are legal, if you look illegal, you have no real rights. I would add that we should spy on and torture anyone, including US citizens, suspected of terrorism. The number of innocent citizens whose privacy is accidentally invaded or who die during interrogation is so small that the Constitution would easily suffice to wipe up the blood and feces left in their wake.
Well first off, those are absolutely insane comparisons. It never ceases to amaze me how the simple act of enforcing our laws gets the left all in a huff.
Second, I'm assuming you are alluding to the recent news about the NSA eavesdropping on citizens. Well, I'm sorry, but if someone known as an Al Quada opertive is calling anyone in America, I don't care what needs to be done to trace that call.
Finally, I'm sick and tired of being put in the same category of the likes of Saddam Hussein. It was his torture chambers (which we shut down by the way) who were maiming and killing people. I hardly think you can honestly compare water-boarding or even being interrogated by a female to that.
When you decide to stop hating America and stop drinking the wacko leftist koolaid, let me know.
