Another Kennedy Car Crash Cover Up???

If this wasn't a real story, you'd think it was a Letterman joke. Guess it runs in the family. Thankfully no one died this time!

Editor's note: In light of recent developments and if he continues to be open and forthright on the incident, I'll take him at his word unless proven differently. I want to applaud Rep. Kennedy for taking personal responsibility and entering rehab for his addiction to pain killers. It is definitely not an easy thing to ever publicly face your trials, which I can't even imagine having to do while also being a Kennedy.

The above joke had nothing whatsoever to do with any recent developments of which I knew nothing about, but just purely with the car crash, being a Kennedy, and having holes in the story.

I was going to take down the joke above, but then the comments attached would make no sense. So, I left it up and added this note to reflect a different thought.

Mr. Kennedy has a long history of fighting mental illness and addiction, and claims he was disoriented due to sleep medication he had taken. It may be the truth, it may not. To me, it does not matter.

You may not agree with his politics, but no one who has ever encountered the man has not praised his courage for being public with his shortcomings or his commitment to fighting the diseases that have impacted him on a very personal level.

Many people, politicians or otherwise, never have the courage to address their demons, let alone in fornt of an entire country. So while you may think this is one giant punchline, just stop and think about it for a minute. He may be a Kennedy, but he is also a man who is made up of a moral fiber that is as strong as any in the world.

CT, you yoursef have posted on your web page about fighting your shortcomings and how they have affected your life. This shows me that you are a person who is committed to improving himself by trying to face down the problems that have caused great pain and confusion. Mr. Kennedy is no different.

So, let he who is without sin...well, you know the rest.

Southpaw...you really need to learn how to take a joke...I guarantee that Letterman, Leno, and lots of other comedians did a joke on this topic, so you better write them too if you are so passionate about Rep. Kennedy is not allowed to be used in a joke.

It is unfortunate for him that his father happens to be ole Teddy who also had a car wreck that still to this day is a matter of much mystery.

We'll let all the facts of the case come out (well except the sobriety test that wasn't given), but regardless, it is a funny event that has nothing to do with the issues he fights for.

sorry, I don't find anything funny about it.

I can take a joke. I guess other people's sickness and misfortune just don't crack me up the way they used to.

Or do you mean take a joke like the way the president did during Stephen Colbert's speech at the press dinner, scowling and pouting. Like that?

Southpaw, how about the "Limbaugh staying out of your medicine cabinet" statement you made on a previous post?

Your well stated comment on Mr. Kennedy's condition can also apply to Rush!

Yes I did say that. However, I brought up that incident to illustrate the hypocrisy of conservative commentators when it comes to pointing out the shortcomings of those who disagree with them, yet never addressing the similar shortcomings of their compatriots.

While I do indeed see the analogy you are trying to draw, and there is a nugget of truth, I will make this comparrison: Rush Limbaugh has made a career out of attacking people, often times baselessly. Many viewed his problem as a sort of come-uppance; along the lines of my "he who is without sin" reference.

Mr. Kennedy, regardless of who his father may be or what his father may have done, has done everything possible to use his position of power to bring attention to a disease that affects, and kills, millions. So while at the most base level, they suffer from the same affliction, I stand by my comment regarding Mr. Limbaugh. He so often had an aura of smugness and superiority, yet in the end, he is just as human as the rest of us. Mr. Kennedy realizes he is human. I do not know if Mr. Limbaugh's troubles have taught him anything. Maybe they have- but if such is the case, I have seen him make no attempt to take advantage of his enormous power to bring about awareness for the disease of assiction.

I was a bit disturbed by the fact that CT, who has been so public about his own shortcomings that have had a profound impact on his life, would find this incident to be, at least in his own eyes, humorous. He knows how painful a situation like this can be, as do I. Politics and family aside, CT and Mr. Kennedy would appear to have something in common. So I was even more surprised that after my intial post, which I thought made clear the fact that this, in my eyes, is no laughing matter, I was told to "lighten up."

CT clearly loathes the Kennedy family, so he believes there is humor to be found in this unfortunate series of events. I am not a big fan of CT's beliefs and ideologies, yet I would never take advantage of his personal suffering just for a laugh.

Let's all be honest- our political and sociological views have a profound impact on how we view certain events. So yes, I reiterate- keep Rush away from my medicine chest. And I would hop in the car with Teddy or Patrick anytime I needed a ride.

Southpaw, your attempt to paint CT as a hypocrit and Mr. Kennedy as a man of "moral fiber" is not working.

The leftist southpaw said...

CT is not a hypocrit- at least not on this issue. As I stated, I just thought he might be more sensitive to Mr. Kennedy's plight.

You need to lighten up.

Look...I realize that being born a Kennedy comes with INCREDIBLE pressures and challenges. That being said, If Kennedy comes out and is upfront and honest about his condition, then he will have gained my respect. But for now the jury is still out.

My oppologies Southpaw. I mis-spoke. Kennedy has been upfront and honest about his condition.

The accident is another matter.

Southpaw...I honestly did not know anything about Rep. Kennedy personal struggles and thought you had referenced mental illness and addiction as issues he has championed on the Hill not that he dealt with them personally.

Had I known that these were issues he did personally struggle with, you are right in that I would not have posted the joke, regardless of who his father is.

In light of recent developments of him admitting himself to rehab, I'll edit my original post.

CT-

Your response is very dignified and I applaud it.

I have mixed feelings about this. I obviously am somewhat sympathetic because of seeing what Rush and others have gone through. But there still seemed to be a lack of honesty between his 2 different statements. And I'm sorry but there is a different standard for the Kennedys and others. They literally get away with murder and the rest of us have to play by the rules.

I hope he does get help and can put this behind him. And I hope he can be honest about everything too. Denial isn't good for anybody. Even Bob Beckel the democratic hack admitted that on Sean's show.

I understand your mixed feelings Miss C., but I honestly feel like this man's life is in danger. He needs "serious" prayer.
