I don't suppose you and Ms. Coulter have stopped to think about where these riots are taking place- in countries where there is a lower class that has no future or opportunity. Riots do not occur only in response to one event. The L.A. riots in 1992 had less to do with the King verdict, and more to do with the fact that the city was a powder keg waiting to explode. On a bigger scale, World War I was not a response to the shooting of Ferdinand- it would have happened anyway, the shooting was just a triggering mechanism (no pun intended)
Consider that protests to the cartoon in India, a stable Democracy with a flourishing economy and the second-largest muslim population in the world, have been peaceful and controled. In countries such as Nigeria, where the population is constantly opressed by an unstable government, the riots begin violent and escalate to madness.
The fact that Ms. Coulter herself seems to support violence, invasion, and bombing as the answer to every world problem would lead me to think that she really has no room to criticize others who turn to violence as well in order to make their point.
I do not support the riots in any way, or the rioters. But this goes way beyond a cartoon.
Southpaw...Here lies a major difference between us. You see these events as related to poverty while I see them as related to government control and government handouts.
You actually hurt your point and strenghten mine with your India example.
While you didn't give a solution (which is not surprising being your national leaders always do the same) I'll assume your suggested solution being poverty is the reason for this events would be that we need to send these countries more foreign aid (ie...US tax dollars) in order to free them from the bonds of poverty. The whole international welfare solution.
On the other hand my solution would be find ways to bring more independence for the people of these countries by continuing to introduce democratic principles and ideals. The biggest ones being self dependence and self respect.
You are right in that India's response has been different and that proves my point. Where there is more freedom, personal ownership and less government control the people have more to lose by being idiots, so they don't do idiotic things.
Whereas in places that the government owns everything the people have no problem destroying everything being they have no self interest in keeping things stable.
The same can be applied to your US analogy (I'll have to confess WWI is my weakest area of history, so I can't intelligently reply to that assertion). Let's take the '92 riots as well as the recent Katrina looting.
What is the biggest similarity? Both areas have been under the governmental control of the welfare mentality for generations. When for generation after generation you are given everything by the government, you have no idea what it means to be self reliant or have self respect.
People who earn a living the ole fashion way of hard work don't destroy their communities just because they want to like what happened in the '92 LA riots. They have the self respect to say this is our community and destroying it only hurts us.
It's like the analogy of your parents giving you your first car vs. you buying your first car with your own hard earned money. I guarantee you take much better care of the car you buy vs. the one given to you at no cost to you.
Also when your very life is threatened people, who have learned to take care of themselves and not have the government take care of their every need, don't just sit around dying and complaining about where is the government to help me like what happened in NO for Katrina. Instead they band together and take care of themselves until help arrives (see Hurricane Rita response and Hurricane Katrina response everywhere but downtown NO).
So to wrap up this very long comment. The solution is not more government control and government handouts. It is more freedom and more independence! That brings the self reliance and self respect needed to realize that you are part of your community and destroying it is destroying a part of who you are.
